One of the best ways to get to know Houston chiropractor, Dr. Viri, D.C. is to find out about how she got started in chiropractic. This Q&A will help you get familiar with what she believes and her depth of experience. It will give you enough background to start making a decision on whether or not Dr. Viri will be a good fit for your healthcare needs.
Q: Dr. Viri, how did you decide to become a Houston chiropractor?
A: As a child, I was always exposed to holistic medicine and saw it work repeatedly for just about every situation that arose. In my last year of high school, I knew I wanted to help people improve their health without traditional medicine.
I decided find out more about becoming a Clinical Nutritionist; however, during my search I came across the word chiropractic. At the time, I didn't know what chiropractic was. I thought a chiropractor was a doctor who only focuses on helping car accident patients! I found out that chiropractors incorporate nutrition into their practice so I could do both.
As I investigated chiropractic more, I discovered that chiropractors were doctors with a similar medical background as regular medical doctors but they specialize in disorders of the bones, joints and nervous system. They could help people with a minimum of tools – their own hands – and knowledge of how the body works and how to restore health without surgery or medications.
It was the perfect profession for me. The more I work with patients as their Houston chiropractor (Spanish speaking, too), the more I see how chiropractic is a hidden secret to many for how to restore their health. It’s a privilege for me to explain and show every one of my patients the benefits of chiropractic for their own personal life.
Q: What type of experiences did you have in chiropractic school?
A: I loved my time at chiropractic school! I attended Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena and received my bachelor’s of science in biology in December 2010 and my doctorate in chiropractic in August 2012.
During my internship, I treated patients of all ages from pediatrics to the elderly, and with all types of conditions including diabetes, stroke, congenital disorders, high blood pressure and cancer. This was when I had the chance to see the whole potential of what chiropractic could really do for patients. I realized that by adjusting the spine and joints in the extremities, it was possible to start the process of restoration of health, no matter what the patient was going through.
The chiropractic initial consultation is similar to a medical consultation in that first we talked to the patient to find out what they were there for and what happened that brought them to the clinic. Next was a physical evaluation, orthopedic or neurological evaluation, imaging studies such as x-rays, blood tests and any other medical tests deemed necessary. Then came the chiropractic care program, which included
At the clinic, I put patients on a complete rehabilitation program as well, and watched them recover remarkably week by week from auto accidents, falls, and work accidents. Sometimes the programs included acupuncture, and almost always, nutrition – supplements and diet changes. When nutritional protocols were taken to hear by the patient, their recovery was rapid with few setbacks.
Q: Have you treated athletes with Chiropractic; and if so, what type of successes have you had?
A: I was nominated for best Chiropractor of the Year in Texas Highways and as you can imagine, as a Houston chiropractor for four years now, I’ve had the chance to meet people from all walks of life. I get a lot of family member referrals, do health fairs in the community and give presentations on health by invitation, too. I’ve worked on soccer players, softball players, runners, tennis players, football players, and those who play golf.
Playing sports is a great thing for health in so many ways but athletes tend to get injured – and that’s when they need an excellent Houston chiropractor.
Q: Do you speak Spanish, Dr. Viri?
A: Yes, I’m one of the few Spanish-speaking chiropractors here in the Houston area. I’m a member of the Hispanic Chiropractic Association, as well as the Texas Chiropractic Association, the World Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association, too.
